Celebrate Jesus

"For unto us a child is born... His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father. The Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

The Legend of the Candy Cane
A candymaker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a witness, so he made the Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ.

He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the Church, and firmness of the promises of God.

The candymaker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior. It could also represent the staff of the "Good Shepard" with which He reaches down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.

Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candymaker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed. The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Christ on the cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life.

Unfortunately, the candy became known as a Candy Cane - a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time. But the meaning is still there for those who "have eyes to see and ears to hear".

I pray that this symbol will again be used to witness to the Wonder of Jesus and His Great Love that came down at Christmas and remains the ultimate and dominant force in the universe today.

Reflections on Christmas
There's a song from a Christmas musical that sums up the true meaning of Christmas. It begins with an older gentleman reporter reflecting on the season. With sounds of traffic in the background and the hussle and bussle of people scampering around, the reporter stops people and asks them the simple question:

"What does Christmas mean?"

Each person gives their candid response:

  • One young lady responds
"Parties.. I've been to one every night for the last two weeks".

  • A grouchy man retorts
"Christmas is once and year and that's enough. I hate shopping and more than that I hate it when the bills comes due.".

  • Another lady wearly replies
"...tired feet, pure exhaustion, never enough money, and too many people to buy for."

  • Next a 7 year old girl is asked the question. She shyly says
"I don't know; they haven't taught us yet".

A choir begins singing a song. They reflect upon Christmas as seen by many people. But as the song progresses, you are invited to celebrate Christmas as God intended. Here are the words of the song:

Verse 1:

"Christmas is so many things, it's looking back remembering all the joys you had when you were young. It's listening to the yuletide sounds; the chimes and bells as they resound. All the christmas carols that are sung.

It's giving gifts to girls and boys; lots of presents; lots of toys so neatly wrapped beneath the tree. Christmas is so many things; all the happiness it brings. But most of all it's God's gift to you and me."

Chorus:

"So this year celebrate Christmas in your heart. Let His joy come and fill you from the start. His perfect peace and love to you He'll impart. So this year celebrate Christmas in your heart."

Verse 2:

"Christmas became real to me as I looked back in history and saw God sent his only Son. He came to earth so I could live. He gave me all He had to give. Now a new life in me has begun.

With songs and precious memories; lovely gifts and tinsil trees; on Christmas day all play a part. But nothing could mean more to me than knowing Jesus personally; for now I have Christmas in my heart."

Chorus:

"So this year celebrate Christmas in your heart. Let His joy come and fill you from the start. His perfect peace and love to you He'll impart. So this year celebrate Christmas in your heart."

What does Christmas mean to you?

We pray that during this holiday season
you'll take time to
Celebrate Jesus in your heart.

Love,
Paul and Hope
